A veteran, Clarence answered the call of duty following graduation from high school and served honorably with the coalition forces that liberated Kuwait during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Upon his return, Clarence attended The Ohio State University where he earned his undergraduate and law degrees. Clarence then refocused his commitment to service to his community as an attorney in private practice. County courts frequently appointed Clarence to represent the interests of children in abuse, neglect and divorce cases. In 2007, the late Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, Thomas J. Moyer, appointed Clarence as a commissioner in the Ohio Court of Claims. Clarence served as one of seven commissioners with statewide appellate jurisdiction in victims of crime cases. In 2009, Clarence was appointed Franklin County Auditor. He was subsequently re-elected in 2010 and 2014. As a conservative steward of taxpayers’ money, Clarence makes sure that all taxes are measured fairly and accurately, and responds to citizens’ requests for more information and transparency about how their tax dollars are spent. The Franklin County Auditor’s Office has won national awards for its innovative efforts under Clarence’s leadership. Since taking office in 2009, he has returned nearly $18 million to local governments and schools and saved county taxpayers millions of dollars through technological advancements. Clarence draws on his life experience to help him handle the duties of the Franklin County Auditor’s Office and protects taxpayers throughout his community. A strong fiscal conservative, Clarence has streamlined government and always put the interests of taxpayers first. Clarence and his wife, Angela, married in 1992.
